The starting point of something is called the beginning. Technology changes and evolves as with anything else. Few people remember, or even know, what a BBS was. BBSs were the Internet before technological evolution. The verb form of the acronym BBS is BBSing. A person who used a BBS was called a BBSer. Wannabe BBSers were called lamers.
A lamer is a slang name originally applied in the BBS, cracker, and phreaker society to someone who didn't really understand what they were doing. Today it is less frequently used but used more generally to describe anyone perceived to be contemptible or ignorant.
"During their heyday, from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s, a Bulletin Board System, or BBS, was a computer system running software that allows users to connect and log in to the system using a terminal program. Once logged in, a user can perform functions such as uploading and downloading software and data, reading news and bulletins, and exchanging messages with other users, either through electronic mail or in public message boards. Many BBSes also offer on-line games, in which users can compete with each other, and BBSes with multiple phone lines often provide chat rooms, allowing users to interact with each other.
"Originally BBSes were accessed only over a phone line using a modem. The term 'Bulletin Board System' itself is a reference to the traditional cork-and-pin bulletin board often found in entrances of supermarkets, schools, libraries or other public areas where people can post messages, advertisements, or community news." -- Wikipedia
A Bulletin Board System was the beginning of large-scale computer and human networking and the Internet. The Internet became popular in the earl- to mid-1990's. Though Bulletin Board Systems became obsolete, their existence was the reason the Internet became popular, because of the "idea and concept," not the implementation.
The illegal music and software industries and pornography industry all existed in small numbers and were nearly impossible to monitor. These underground Bulletin Board Systems were called "Elite BBSs". These Elite BBSs usually required someone to vouch for you to gain access to them. You could engage in hacking, phreaking, cracking, and pirating software (called warez) within these Elite Bulletin Board Systems. They just did not become such a known issue until millions of people were able to do them. THINK ABOUT IT! The Bulletin Board System was the preface to the "Web". The Web, today's Internet, is the EVOLUTION of the Bulletin Board System.
I have been using computers and technology since I was 5. Back then, it was unusual for a 5 year old to use a computer. In those days computers were extremely limited on what you could do. In the early 1980's, most households did not have a computer and word processing was done with a typewriter. I preferred to do my homework by hand until high school, when computers finally started becoming popular and affordable. Today, kids are using computers and surfing the Internet successfully long before age 5!
The easy answer is that a spider is a predatory invertebrate that has two body segments, eight legs, no chewing mouth parts, no wings, and silk-spinning organs at the back end of the body that spin silk to make cocoons for eggs or traps for prey, called webs. Some spiders are venomous and some are harmless.
An Internet spider is similar in that it crawls the Web. The Internet is an interwoven working of websites and information. An Internet spider--or just spider--is an automated computer program that surfs the Internet in a methodical manner gathering information. Google's spider is called the GoogleBot. Another term for spider is crawler, bot, and robot. The process of analyzing websites through these automated programs is called spidering, or crawling. Basically, the GoogleBot collects all of the website's pages and returns them to Google where their algorithm determines each page's PageRank. PageRank is the score given to a page's importance determined by its quality.
Web Your Name® chose the spider for its mascot and logo because of its symbolism and representation of what we interact with on a daily basis online. This advertising agency gets RESULTS!!! This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
